Tunisia–Germany : Talks on strengthening metrology and market surveillance

A meeting held on Wednesday, 11 February 2026 brought together Samir Abid, Minister of Trade and Export Development, and representatives of Germany’s National Metrology Institute and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation. Discussions focused on prospects for cooperation in the fields of metrology, market surveillance, and consumer protection.

The meeting forms part of a technical cooperation programme aimed at supporting the strengthening of quality infrastructure in Africa and backing national efforts to develop a comprehensive national quality policy, in line with best international standards and practices.

The minister stressed that improving quality infrastructure is an essential prerequisite and a key lever for facilitating foreign trade and boosting the competitiveness of national products in international markets, by ensuring compliance with applicable specifications and standards.

He also noted that developing the quality system would help remove technical barriers to trade and shorten inspection timelines and procedures—thereby strengthening the confidence of economic partners and supporting access for Tunisian exports to external markets.

In the same context, Samir Abid said metrology is among the ministry’s priorities, given its strategic role in ensuring measurement accuracy, reinforcing transparency in commercial transactions, protecting consumers, and securing economic exchanges.

For their part, representatives of Germany’s National Metrology Institute expressed their readiness to support Tunisia’s efforts in metrology and contribute to the development of related infrastructure, in a way that strengthens institutional cooperation between the institute and the ministry and supports the modernisation of the quality system.
