The official inauguration of the “Queen Marie of Romania little square ”, located in Cité Jardins, in front of the consular section of the Romanian Embassy in Tunis, took place on Tuesday, October 27, 2020.
The inauguration is a symbol of the excellent Romanian-Tunisian relationships both at the political-diplomatic level and at the level of local authorities. In recent years, these connections have grown , not only from a political-economic and academic point of view but additionally through solid relations at the level of local authorities. Ms. Souad Abderrahim, mayor of the capital Tunis, visited Romania and had meetings with local authorities in several cities to exchange experiences and good administrative practices.
Considering the decision of the municipal council of the City of Tunis concerning the square, dating from December 6, 2019, as well as the anniversary of the Paris Peace Treaties (1919-1920), signed after the First World War, the inauguration of this public space is a first not exclusively in Tunisia but also in Africa. The Paris Peace Conference and implicitly the Treaty of Versailles are important historical events in which Queen Marie of Romania played an important role.
During the event, the Tunisian authorities were represented by Ms. Souad Abderrahim, mayor of the capital Tunis and sheikh of the medina as well as councillors from the town hall.
The initiative to have a space in Tunis bearing the name of Queen Marie belongs to the Romanian Embassy in Tunisia and was warmly supported by the local authorities. The Romanian authorities were served by Dan Stoenescu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania in Tunis who read a message from Bogdan Aurescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs. The event also brought together representatives of the diplomatic corps, members of the Romanian community in Tunisia, students of the Romanian Lectorate in Tunis and former Tunisian students who studied in Romania.
In the context of a pandemic, the inauguration ceremony was restricted in compliance with health protection rules.
The inaugural square unveiled dedicates the nomination of Queen Mary to this public space, located in one of the most prestigious districts of the Tunisian capital. The strong universal personality of Queen Marie of Romania remains an example of courage and progress in the history of Romania.
By creating this public space, “we will give the opportunity to the inhabitants of the capital Tunis who visit the consular section of the Romanian Embassy to learn more about the history of the Romanians which will bring our two peoples even closer”, the Romanian Embassy has informed.
