The National Union of Tunisian Journalists submitted its annual report on the reality of press freedom in Tunisia for the period extending from May 3, 2023 to May 3, 2024.
The report documented the referral to justice of 39 journalists under injunctive laws, such as the anti-terrorism and anti-money laundering law, the Communications Code, the Penal Code and Decree 54.
During this year, Tunisian courts handed down 5 prison rulings against journalists and commentators, and the Journalists’ Union registered 211 attacks against journalists, reporters and photographers.
The report addresses the policy of closure towards the media, especially on the part of the presidency and the House of Representatives.
For his part, the president of the Journalists’ Union, Zied Dabbar, confirmed having obtained 70 notices of non-payment of journalists’ wages or arbitrary expulsion (at least 250 journalists), calling this a dangerous indicator.
He considered that it is not possible to talk of freedom of the press in the light of restrictive legislation. He also announced the launch of a solidarity fund between journalists.
