Tunisia-Legislative Decree 116: “Hichem Mechichi has betrayed everyone,” says UGTT

UGTT Deputy Secretary-General Sami Tahri warned against amending Legislative Decree 116 “which would be a step towards dictatorship.”

Speaking to  Mosaique FM, he felt that the Head of Government, Hichem Mechichi, betrayed everyone when he withdrew the law on audiovisual communication a few hours before the presentation of the proposed amendment by the Al-Karama coalition.

According to him, the purpose of this amendment is to undermine the independence of the Independent High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HAICA) and leave it at the mercy of partisan quotas.

Tahri pointed out that this initiative paves the way for corrupt lobbies to monopolize the media, open them up to external funding and control them with the power of money from unknown sources.

“We went to see the President of the Republic two weeks ago to urge him not to sign an unconstitutional law which violates the sovereignty of the country”, he added, stressing that plains will be filed with justice Tunisian and international if this amendment passes.
