Tunisia – Libya: When a Libyan Commentator Calls for Tunisia’s National Team to Play Behind Closed Doors!

Appearing on a sports programme broadcast by Al Massar TV, a Libyan journalist and commentator called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to sanction the Tunisian national team by ordering it to play behind closed doors, following what he described as “violent incidents” that allegedly occurred after the matches against Uganda and Botswana in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The journalist said he had sent members of the Libyan Football Federation videos showing Tunisian supporters throwing bottles after the match, so that the federation could refer the matter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and request that a behind-closed-doors sanction be imposed at the Radès stadium.

He also argued that preventing Tunisian supporters from attending the team’s upcoming matches would constitute a reciprocal measure following what happened to Libyan supporters during a previous match between Libya and Cape Verde in the World Cup qualifiers.

With the Carthage Eagles due to travel to Tripoli next November to face Libya on matchday three of the qualifiers, some Libyan parties are therefore pushing for the return fixture to be played behind closed doors. It should be noted that the Libyan national team is also competing for qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations and has just one point after two rounds, behind Tunisia and Botswana, who have two points each.
