Tunisia-Louzir: 160 cases of Shigella in Tunisia

The director of Pasteur Institute, Hechmi Louzir, said this Thursday, December 22, 2022, that 160 cases of Shigella have been registered so far in Tunisia, adding that the number of contaminations has not increased for a week.

Louzir underlined, in a statement to the TAP agency, that the Pasteur Institute has detected 160 cases of contaminations in Shigella until today, most of which have recovered and one died last month, namely an 8-year-old girl whose health was complicated before hospitalization.

He affirmed that the basic health management and the National and Emerging Disease Observatory analyzed all cases of Shigella damage to find out if the infection is due to water, food, or other, Adding that the causes of the infection have not been determined and remain unknown to date.

Louzir said that this bacteria is dangerous because it spreads fast and resists antibiotics, adding that it causes strong diarrhoea and causes serious complications for children, such as fever and pain in the belly and nausea.

“It is transmitted through the consumption of contaminated food or water,” he remarked.
