Tunisia: LTDH Officially Inaugurates Human Rights Academy

The Tunisian League for Human Rights (LTDH) officially inaugurated its brand-new Human Rights Academy on Saturday, May 17, 2025, during a ceremony held in Tunis. The event marked the celebration of the League’s 48th anniversary and brought together numerous partners and representatives from civil society.

The Human Rights Academy: A Space for Training and Civic Engagement

This initiative aims to strengthen the culture of human rights in Tunisia by focusing on training and capacity-building for activists and human rights defenders. The Academy relies on a network of expert trainers specialized in various areas of fundamental rights, with the objective of creating a solid pool of skills to serve democracy, justice, and human dignity.

According to the LTDH, this initiative represents a major milestone in its strategy to promote the values of freedom, justice, and human dignity.

A National Conference on Rights and Freedoms

Alongside the inauguration, the League held a national conference titled “The Reality of Rights and Freedoms in Tunisia.” The event brought together several speakers who addressed key topics, including:

Democracy and the rule of law
Judicial independence
Economic and social rights
The role of the welfare state

The conference concluded with the presentation of the LTDH’s report on prison conditions in Tunisia for the period 2022–2025. The report provided a critical assessment of detention conditions and called for urgent reforms.

A Pioneer Association in Africa and the Arab World

Founded on May 14, 1976, the Tunisian League for Human Rights received official recognition on May 7, 1977. It is the first human rights organization established in Africa and the Arab world.

Its primary mission is to defend human rights and fundamental freedoms—both individual and collective—as guaranteed by the Tunisian Constitution, national laws, and international conventions, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
