Tunisia-Maher Zid and Mohamed Ali Aroui sentenced to prison terms

The court of first instance of Tunis issued, this Wednesday, May 30, a prison sentence of one and a half years against Maher Zid, former MP and a sentence of one year against Mohamed Ali Aroui , former spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior, with immediate execution of sentences.

This information was confirmed by Mohamed Zeitouni, spokesperson for the Court of First Instance of Tunis, during a statement on Mosaïque FM radio.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by ministry workers, accusing Maher Zid of having employed his position as presenter of a radio show to broadcast information about them without verifying its veracity, which resulted in damage to their reputation. It was confirmed that this information had been provided to Maher Zid by Mohamed Ali Aroui, while he was acting as spokesperson for a ministry.

According to Mohamed Zeitouni, the court convicted Maher Zid to one year in prison for attributing inaccurate facts to a public official and another six months for public defamation, with all sentences carrying immediate execution. For his part, Mohamed Ali Aroui was condemned to six months in prison for attributing inaccurate facts to a public official and six months for public defamation, also with immediate execution.
