Tunisia – Monastir: Tourists: Who will put an end to the abuses of taxi drivers?

A poor picture than that offered to visitors to Tunisia, when they sense invaded and harassed by taxi drivers, always stationed in front of hotels, who devise as apprentice tourist guides and inflict on tourists the circuits and businesses they want, in exchange for a lump sum of money which respects neither the usage rates nor the meter indications.

These taxi drivers fully impose tours of 2 or 3 hours on tourists, following an itinerary pre-established by them, with departure and return in front of the hotel. They stop them from visiting the city on their own terms, pushing them to follow a particular route, eat at restaurants of their choice, and shop in stores they choose. These mini-tours are imposed on tourists with prices that range from one day to the next. So most tourists say they are scammed by these people, who prevent them from enjoying walks in the city or in the districts of the old town, or from choosing the shops where they do their shopping.

This behaviour greatly disturbs tourists who don’t even know who to complain to. And that bothers tourism professionals even more, beginning with the real guides and the traders and owners of cafes and restaurants who are forced to pay discounts to taxi drivers, otherwise, they are deprived of customers.
