Tunisia – More than 14,000 people undergo regular kidney dialysis sessions

The President of the Tunisian Society of Nephrology, Dialysis, and Kidney Transplantation, Dr. Habib Sekhiri, said on Sunday, April 13, 2025, that kidney disease statistics in Tunisia show that one in ten Tunisians suffers from kidney disease and that more than 14,000 are undergoing kidney dialysis, in addition to the high number of patients on the waiting list who need a donor, stressing the importance of early detection to prevent chronic kidney failure.

In a statement to Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP), Dr. Sekhiri added that diabetes, high blood pressure, bacterial infections, and excessive medication use without medical consultation are among the main diseases that cause kidney failure in Tunisia, calling for the need to follow a proper diet, exercise, drink plenty of water, refrain from smoking, treat diabetes and high blood pressure, and eliminate kidney stones.
