Tunisia-Nabil Gargabou appointed delegated administrator of TAP

Nabil Gargabou was appointed on provisional basis as delegated administrator of TAP news agency, pending naming a new CEO.

The appointment took place at an exceptional meeting of the Executive Board of TAP chaired Tuesday by CEO and Board Chair of TAP Mouna Mtibaa.

The meeting was convened by the Secretary General of the Government who had sent a letter to the board members, dated April 26, 2021.

The appointment of a TAP Executive Board member as delegated administrator was decided at a meeting held at the Government Palace in Kasbah on April 21, pending naming a CEO in a period not exceeding two months.

The meeting, which took place in the presence of representatives of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists and the General Media Union, under the UGTT, focused on the situation of TAP and Shems FM Radio.

TAP staff had rejected in early April the appointment of Kamel Ben Younes as CEO. They considered it “overtly political and partisan”.

They also warned against an attempt at political subjugation through this appointment “which seriously threatens the independence of the agency, as a public service funded by taxpayers.”

The staff observed an open sit-in since April 6 to protest that appointment.

The sit-in was lifted on April 19 following the resignation of Kamel Ben Younes.
