The director of water distribution at the Tunisian Water Exploitation and Distribution Company, Mohamed Hedi Al-Ahmadi, addressed on a private radio station, Friday July 12, 2024, the recurring water cuts issues, the causes which are generally technical and related to sudden malfunctions. These are circumstantial failures for which the company is accountable. In these cases, reports are issued to notify citizens and immediate intervention is carried out to repair the damage and restore water until the work is completed.
“But over the last five years,” he added, “and due to climate change, high temperatures and retention of rainfall, which have led to a drop in water levels and scarcity, we have started to record interruptions linked to the lack of water resources. ” He explained that the quantities of water present in several regions such as the Sahel and Sfax. Cap Bon, Kef and Gafsa have fallen short of demand.
He confirmed that SONEDE is doing everything possible to address the shortage of water resources, emphasising the programming of new deep wells and working on several strategic projects, in addition to resorting to water desalination.
Concerning the criticisms addressed to the quality of drinking water, Al Ahmadi emphasised that it is monitored by the Ministry of Health, in addition to being subject to self-control by the company’s technicians, and that analyses of Water samples are taken daily to ensure its safety and portability.
