In recent days, the debate surrounding instances of whale or shark species attacking humans has resurfaced, sparked by a concerning incident implicating orca whales attacking a Polish yacht off the coast of Morocco. This event has pressed many to recall similar incidents, such as the one involving a Russian tourist in Egypt last year.
Concerning this topic, the coordinator of the marine program of the World Wide Fund for Nature Dr Mehdi Issa told Tunisie Numérique that orcas, which appeared on the Moroccan coast, are marine mammals that feed primarily on tuna and live in the Mediterranean Sea in the Strait of Gibraltar between Morocco and Spain. Because the water is colder than average, and consequently it cannot be found in Tunisia.
As for sharks, Issa confirmed that there are around 64 species of sharks on the Tunisian coast, but they do not pose any threat to vacationers, as sharks attack humans after they are provoked, and in most cases they use blood.
The speaker recollected the incident that took place last year in Egypt, where a shark ate a Russian tourist. It was during the Eid al-Adha period, when the ships transporting the Eid sacrifices of cows and sheep flounder from dead animals in the sea, which makes them food for sharks, which they love.
