Tunisia – Palm aphids… A new pest threatening the oases of Tozeur

The Tozeur Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development issued a warning to farmers yesterday, Friday, July 4, 2025, following the appearance of aphids on palm trees, a threat to production, as evidenced by photos and videos posted on Facebook.
The Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development explained in its press release that climatic conditions, characterized by high temperatures and drought, have contributed to the appearance of young insects on vegetable crop residues, wild grasses, and certain palm tree trunks, particularly young ones, on some farms.
The Delegation called on all farmers to closely monitor their farms and immediately report the presence of the insect to the relevant agricultural extension services. It should be noted that a technical committee representing the Regional Delegation for Agricultural Development, the Oasis Agricultural Research Center, and the Date Technical Center launched a field inspection of the insect about three days ago to identify its nature and assess its extent. The file was also forwarded to the General Directorate of Plant Health of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources to develop a scientific control protocol.
It should be noted that the aphid is present for the first time on palm trees, particularly young ones, while its presence had previously been observed on grasses. Social media has published live images of the bug’s spread in the Ibn al-Chabbat oasis in Nefta and in the Dhafiriya oasis, in the Tameghza delegation.
