Tunisia-President of Bar appeals to the President of Republic

Today, Wednesday, the Council of Deans of the National Order of Lawyers urged the President of the Republic, in his capacity as the guarantor of the Constitution, to undertake required legal measures to uphold the role of the legal profession in safeguarding rights and freedoms. Further, they called for initiating a dialogue with the profession’s entities.

The Council considered, in a statement issued after a meeting, against the backdrop of recent events in the Gaza Strip, that the intervention of security forces in “the lawyer’s house” on two occasions to apprehend two lawyers, which he called an “assault operation,” constitutes “a breach of international conventions and laws and a dangerous targeting and escalation against the legal profession.”

The deans condemned what they called “campaigns of incitement against the legal profession and justifying attacks on its headquarters”, underlining “the supremacy of law and the role of the legal profession in the defense of rights, freedoms and guarantees granted to their functions and the headquarters of the Bar Association. They called on the Council of the Commission to adopt suitable forms of combat according to developments and situations.
