Tunisia-Rached Ghannouchi pays tribute to Béji Caïd Essebsi

Ennahdha leader, Rached Ghannouchi, returned on the relationship with former President of the Republic, Béji Caïd Essebsi, in a tribute published this Wednesday, July 22, 2020, on his page.

Rached Ghannouchi described the ties between Beji Caid Essebsi, who died on July 25, 2019, as a sincere friendship, both politically and personally. He added that the two sides put aside their differences and their feelings to fuse around a common will which is of serving the interests of Tunisia. “Each of us seized the moment so that Tunisia does not remain a prisoner of the past and believed that the revolution is a common responsibility. We have both returned from exile, me after twenty years of exile abroad and Beji Caid Essbesi from exile inside the country, “said the chief Enahdha.

He added that the former president went to visit him at his home, with an outstretched arm gesture to begin a new era in a relationship that has gone through three phases. “A first when he was head of government in 2011 and which was distinguished by mutual respect and dialogue during which we also had many interviews. A second, which fortunately did not last, was marked by cold relations, when Ennhdha chose the Troika and he the opposition. This page was quickly turned after the 2013 crisis when it became evident that political stability needs reconciliation between Islamists and Destourians… In 2016, my presence at the Nidaa congress in Sousse and the presence of Béji Caïd Essebsi at the Ennahdha congress in Radès drew a nice picture of Tunisia defeating the culture of hatred and exclusion. Could we have done more on the path to reconciliation… yes, but underestimating our achievements or denigrating it and turning against it is excluded because saving the democratic experience was not a simple undertaking ”, continued Rached Ghannouchi.

The leader of Ennahdha highlighted the tact of Béji Caïd Essebsi, who chose the path of reconciliation to shield the democratic experience. “Time confirms that the culture of the union in a fragile political context collides to the increased danger of political chaos and tensions. Whoever reads these lines will realize that the union we have created is alive and that Tunisia’s success lies in its revolution. Our union was based on a sincere loving relationship devoid of narrow interests and calculation. Our friendship has been beneficial for Tunisia, ”he said.
