Tunisia – Saïed calls for urgent acquisition of number of buses to alleviate suffering of citizens

President of the Republic, Kais Saied, welcomed this afternoon, Friday, August 2, 2024, at Carthage palace. Sarra Zaafarani Zanzri, Minister of Equipment and Housing, is responsible for the management of the Ministry of Transport.

The Head of State underscored the need to find urgent solutions in public transport, as transport has become a daily pain within and between cities. This situation is the result of the abandonment of public transport by the state in the early 90s of the last century and has declined from year to year, for example in Greater Tunis the number of buses decreased in ten years, going from 1,157 to 350, in 2024, in addition to the metro cars, most of them obsolete, and the trains which have not been employed for more than forty years.

The President of the Republic called for the urgent acquisition of several buses to at least alleviate the persistent suffering of travellers and to prepare a strategy for the restoration and development of public transport to react to the legitimate right of citizens to these vital facilities.

The Head of State likewise called for the continuation of the distribution of social housing according to clear standards based on justice within a framework of total transparency, indicating in this context that the distribution operations which took place in several areas of the Republic were accepted by all because they were carried out within the framework of full respect for the text which regulates the distribution process and not, as was the case in the past, based on loyalty to this or that party or due to involvement in corruption networks.
