The enhancement of Tunisian-Algerian cooperation in the electricity sector was the focus of a meeting held on Thursday, January 9, 2025. The meeting brought together Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatima Thabet Chiboub, and the CEO of Algeria’s Electricity and Gas Company “Sonelgaz,” Mourad Adjal. Furthermore present were Wael Chouchane, the Secretary of State for Energy Transition, and Azouz Baalal, Algeria’s Ambassador to Tunisia.
The talks centred on advancing joint energy collaboration and strengthening the tripartite electrical interconnection between Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya. This initiative seeks to address several energy challenges, especially managing peak electricity consumption during summer and reducing pressure on transmission and distribution networks.
Fatima Thabet Chiboub underscored the significance of the meeting, which reflects the shared commitment at the highest levels in both countries to enhance cooperation, especially in the energy sector—a vital component of economic and social development.
Mourad Adjal highlighted the necessity for both parties to intensify efforts to expand the scope of bilateral partnership, fostering greater integration and synergy.
This meeting is part of Mourad Adjal’s visit to Tunisia, in response to an invitation from the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG). The visit follows up on a tripartite meeting between STEG, Sonelgaz, and Libya’s General Electricity Company (Gecol) regarding the tripartite electrical interconnection.
The visit likewise marked the signing of two agreements between the Tunisian and Algerian electricity companies. These agreements aim to further strengthen economic and social partnerships, exchange technical expertise, and support future energy projects in both countries.
The meeting was attended by Faiçal Trifa, CEO of the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company, and Belhassen Chiboub, Director General of Electricity and Energy Transition.
This cooperation underscores the shared vision between Tunisia and Algeria to address pressing energy challenges and work toward a sustainable and integrated energy future.
