The school year in Tunisia, scheduled to resume on Monday, January 6, 2025, is anticipated to face considerable disruption due to an indefinite strike announced by the National Coordination of Substitute Teachers. The strike is being organized in protest against the non-payment of financial entitlements and the failure to implement decrees related to the professional regularization of substitute teachers. Despite signing their contracts, these teachers have not received their wages or financial rights since the start of the school year.
Imad Abdelkebir, the national coordinator of substitute teachers, voiced his deep frustration during a statement on national radio. He condemned the ongoing neglect of teachers’ rights and the lack of progress in addressing their demands. Abdelkebir also criticized the Ministry of Education for accumulating unpaid financial dues, leaving teachers in growing economic insecurity. This prolonged situation has made it increasingly difficult for teachers to maintain their professional commitment.
