After yesterday general session, the Supreme Judicial Council invoked the last events which took place recently in particular the campaigns of denigration which target Tunisian judges. It accordingly placed the accent on the independence of the judiciary, emphasising that no party can intervene in its competencies and specialities, in accordance with the Constitution and international treaties.
The CSM further indicated that judges are subject to prosecution and disciplinary sanctions in accordance with legal texts. It thus condemned smear campaigns against judges and the judiciary, stipulating that one of the bases of a fair trial is to protect the judge from any sort of pressure that could impair its independence and impartiality.
The CSM also said was the exclusive legal party allowed to study the cases of judges and take the needed legal measures against them, if necessary, specifying that it took this initiative to preserve the independence of the judiciary.
