President Kaïs Saïed paid a surprise visit to the open-air theatre located in the Olympic district of Bouhsina in Sousse on Sunday, November 10.
The theatre, constructed at great expense, has been shut for more than five years due to compliance issues and poor workmanship found after its construction.
A 3 million dinar investment left abandoned
The theatre, which cost more than 3 million dinars to build, was believed to provide Sousse residents with an open-air cultural space for artistic and cultural events in the region.
However, as soon as the work was finished, numerous irregularities were recorded, making the site unfit to open to the public. Construction defects and security shortcomings prompted local authorities to keep it closed, depriving the city of this artistic meeting place.
A blocked project that raises questions about the management of public funds
This theatre, closed for more than five years, raises questions about the management of public funds and the monitoring of cultural infrastructure projects in Tunisia. President Saïed’s visit emphasises the necessity to reexamine the conditions for carrying out such projects, especially when large sums are committed to infrastructure that remains unused.
With this visit, Kaïs Saïed appears to want to send a clear message: the reopening of this type of infrastructure and the rigorous management of public projects must be priorities to provide citizens with services and equipment adapted to their needs.
