Tunisia – Tataouine: Aerial Spraying Used to Combat Locusts

Measures to fight desert locusts in Tataouine governorate were reinforced Tuesday morning with aerial spraying operations carried out by planes in the rugged mountainous areas near Oum Zoggar in the Dhehiba district, where the presence of this insect has been registered.

On Monday, for the sixth consecutive night, technical teams continued to spray pesticides using tankers and tractors in areas identified during the day by other technical teams tasked with identifying locations where locusts had landed before sunset. Mustapha Gouider, head of the Dhehiba local farmers’ union, told TAP that the locusts have not multiplied and that the areas where they have been spotted since March 12 have not spread, stressing that farmers are also contributing to surveillance operations and protecting cultivated areas from this pest with the means at their disposal.

The Regional Committee for Vigilance and Locust Control is still meeting continuously in anticipation of any emergency, closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the crisis units set up at the municipal level to liaise with the various stakeholders.
