Tunisia- The Bar Association asks parliament not to adopt Amendment of Legislative Decree 116

The Council of the Bar Association has warned against the outcomes that would emerge from the adoption by parliament of the proposed amendment to Legislative Decree No. 116 on the freedom of audiovisual communication.

It concludes that this amendment will enable those who hold power because of their wealth and pressure circles to assert their control over the Tunisian media scene and therefore plant chaos by liberalizing the sector without the most trivial respect for the principles of transparency and independence.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Bar Association expresses its “solidarity” and full support with professionals in the sector and their professional organizations.
It also asks the MPs to reject this initiative and to resume the debate around the “bill which has been withdrawn” so as to serve the interests of the Tunisian people by guaranteeing freedom of opinion and expression.
The Council of the Bar Association calls on Parliament not to approve a project on which the components of civil society have not given their opinion.
