Tunisia: The Packaging Sector Generates More Than 25,000 Direct Jobs and Records Annual Growth Exceeding 10%

The Ministry reported that the packaging sector comprises more than 250 active companies, over 100 of which have obtained international compliance certifications. The sector has created more than 25,000 direct jobs and is posting an annual growth rate exceeding 10%.

The printing sector, for its part, employs around 7,000 workers across nearly 120 companies, the Ministry noted, praising the efforts of all industry stakeholders — particularly the Technical Center for Packaging and Conditioning, regarded as a key partner in the development of the packaging industry and a central player in the shift toward a responsible circular economy.

The Ministry recalled that since its establishment in 1996, the Center has played a pivotal role in strengthening companies’ ability to evolve and remain competitive. This has been achieved notably through the promotion of research and development, the creation of a dedicated laboratory for biodegradable packaging, the expansion of testing and analysis capabilities through accredited laboratories, and the implementation of training programs aligned with global technological and regulatory developments.

The Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, announced today that work is underway to update the legislative framework governing plastics and packaging, develop new support mechanisms, and encourage investment in recyclable materials. She also highlighted efforts to assist companies in their transition toward circular and sustainable packaging, and to support research and development projects within the industry.

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to creating regional platforms for the exchange of expertise among stakeholders and to building balanced South-South partnerships capable of generating wealth, strengthening regional integration, and securing a stronger position for Arab and African products on international markets.
