| Foreign Minister Noureddine Erray participated, on Wednesday, by videoconference in the Security Council meeting on the Palestinian cause, held at the request of Tunisia and supported by the Arab group in New York.
The meeting was attended by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abou El-Gheit, Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki, and several foreign ministers of Security Council member countries. In his address, Noureddine Erray pointed out that this meeting is being held a few days before the date announced by the Israeli Government to begin its plan to annex several parts of the occupied Palestinian territories (July1), in flagrant violation of international law and in defiance of the relevant resolutions. “This,” he said, “will undermine efforts to revive the peace process, which is a pressing regional and international emergency,” he said. Quoted in a Foreign Affairs Department statement, Erray reaffirmed Tunisia’s consistent and principled position and support for the brotherly Palestinian people in their struggle for the restoration of their legitimate rights and the creation of an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with Al-Quds as its capital. He called on the international community to assume its responsibilities and prevent the implementation of the annexation plan to avoid tensions in the region, stressing the need to send a strong and clear message to the Israeli side expressing the international community’s rejection of this plan which threatens the stability and security of the region. Noureddine Erray further stressed the need to end the occupation that has symbolised the suffering of the Palestinian people for more than 70 years, calling on the Security Council and the international community to compel Israel to withdraw from the Palestinian and Arab territories according to a specific timetable, to guarantee international protection for the Palestinian people and to lift the siege of Gaza. He urged the international community to continue its support for the efforts of the Palestinian Authority to address the social, economic and human challenges posed by the occupation and the threat of epidemics, believing that a just and comprehensive settlement of the Arab-Israeli conflict was essential for the restoration of peace and security in the region. |
