The UN Development Program’s 2019 Human Development Index has ranked Tunisia as the 91 most developed country out of 189 countries. The new ranking puts Tunisia two places above Mongolia and Lebanon,With a score of 0.739, Tunisia has a “high human development”.
The index is released by the UNDP based on data on life expectancy at birth, education and per capita income. The closer to 1, the higher the development. The report asserted that
“In Tunisia, 1.3 % of the population (around 153.000) is poor multi-dimensionally”, reads the report which shows 3.7% of the Tunisian population are ranked as vulnerable to multidimensional poverty, that is to say 432.000 people.
In the same report, Tunisia ranked 63th out of 162 countries in 2018 in terms of gender inequality. In Tunisia, 31.3% of parliament seats are occupied by women and 42.3% of adult women reached secondary school, against 54.6% of their male counterparts.
For 100,000 live births, 62 women die from pregnancy-related causes; and the teen birth rate is 7.8 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 19 years. Women’s participation in the labour market is 24.1%, compared to 69.9% for men. Libya and Morocco ranked 41st and 118th respectively.
Between 1990 and 2018, life expectancy at birth in Tunisia increased by 7.7 years, average school years went up by 3.7 years and expected years of schooling grew by 4.6 years. Tunisia’s Gross National Income per capita increased by about 95.5% during the same period,reported the TAP agency.
In the Arab world, Saudi Arabia ranked 36th, Bahrain 45, Oman 47, Kuwait 57, Algeria 82, Lebanon 39, Jordan 102, Libya 110, Egypt 116, Palestinian Territories 119, Iraq 120, Morocco 121, Syria 154 and Sudan 168.
The top tiers went to Norway, Switzerland, Ireland who occupied the top three positions in that order. Germany is placed fourth along with Hong Kong, and Australia secured the fifth rank on the global ranking.
