Tunisia: two legislative initiatives revive debate on education and English

The Committee on Education, Vocational Training, Scientific Research, Youth and Sports at the Assembly of the Representatives of the People is holding, this Thursday, April 16, 2026, a hearing with the representatives of the two initiating parties to examine two draft laws concerning the education sector in Tunisia.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. in Room No. 4, and comes as part of the continued review of several legislative initiatives related to Tunisia’s education system and its future development.

    Two bills on the agenda

The session is devoted to reviewing Draft Law No. 07 of 2025 on the establishment and regulation of private educational institutions, as well as Organic Draft Law No. 117 of 2025 on strengthening the use of the English language in the Republic of Tunisia.

Through this dual hearing, the parliamentary committee is continuing its work on issues that concern both the regulation of the private education sector and the place of languages in the country’s public and educational policies.

A debate on the organization of private education

The draft law on private educational institutions raises several issues related to the conditions for establishing these institutions, their organization, and the mechanisms for regulating their activities.

The text seeks to better structure the sector by more clearly defining the rules governing its operation, at a time when private education is playing an increasingly visible role in Tunisia’s educational landscape.

English at the heart of discussions

The committee will also examine an organic draft law devoted to strengthening the use of the English language in Tunisia.

This initiative comes amid growing debate over the place of English in the education system, as well as in public administration, against a backdrop of openness, modernization and adaptation to international developments.

A new stage in the committee’s work

With this session scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2026, the Committee on Education, Vocational Training, Scientific Research, Youth and Sports is entering a new phase in the review of legislative texts directly linked to the future of Tunisia’s school system and the policy directions to be adopted for its development.

The expected discussions on private education and the strengthening of English could therefore contribute more broadly to reflection on the evolution of education policy in Tunisia.
