Tunisia – UGTT calls for speeding up opening of new session of social negotiations

The Tunisian General Labor Union called on Wednesday to accelerate the opening of a new round of social negotiations in the three sectors (civil service, public sector, private sector) in their financial and organizational aspects.

A statement published by the National Executive Bureau of the Union announced that, by January 2025, the final tranche of general wage increases in the civil service and public sector will be achieved. With the conclusion of this tranche, along with the increase in the private sector, the Union has proposed to its central and sectoral structures to “start preparing for a new round of social negotiations.”

This preparation is especially urgent given the collapse of workers and the general population’s purchasing power due to rising prices, the decline in the value of wages, and the growing financial burdens. These challenges are further compounded by the deterioration of public services, infrastructure, and social support systems.

The union also called for “accelerating government intervention to stop price increases, provide basic and essential materials, and address the situation of public facilities, including health, education, transportation, and others.” It called for developing a “participatory strategy to save public institutions, including agricultural offices and public land, air, and maritime transportation companies,” according to the statement.
