Tunisia- UGTT headquarters renovated for 15 million dinars

The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) will leave its “symbolic and historical” headquarters in Mohamed Ali Square in Tunis during this week to move the avenue des Etats-Unis where it has contracted a local provisionally.

Speaking to the TAP,official spokesperson of the UGTT, Sami Tahri said that after the land situation of the old building which the central unit has become owner has been regularized, it has been decided to demolish it for build a more modern room.

Tahri said the early 20th-century building has become dilapidated, despite multiple maintenances, leading to the decision to demolish it and build a new headquarters that takes into account some of the features of the old building including especially the facade.

He added that the cost of the new building is around 15 million dinars, indicating that tenders have been launched and that a plan taking into account the required specifications has been chosen. It has 5 floors and 4 large meeting rooms, including two rooms, each accommodating 600 people.

According to Tahri, the construction works of the new headquarters are expected to take around two years, noting that the Association for the Conservation of the City of Tunis, the National Heritage Institute and the Municipality of Tunis have been consulted on the grounds that the old building is located in an area with several monuments.
