Tunisia–United States : Toward a Stronger Partnership in Heritage and Cinema

Strengthening cooperation in the field of heritage was at the heart of a meeting held on Wednesday between Minister of Cultural Affairs Amina Srarfi and United States Ambassador Bill Bazzi at the ministry’s headquarters, in the presence of several senior officials.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, both sides underscored the importance of consolidating bilateral cooperation in the cultural heritage sector through the exchange of expertise in the restoration of archaeological sites, excavations and surveys, as well as the scientific documentation of tangible and intangible heritage. The talks also addressed the development of training programs for specialized staff, aimed at protecting and promoting Tunisia’s civilizational heritage in line with international standards.

Discussions further explored prospects for cooperation in cinema and the audiovisual industries, including support for co-productions, the exchange of technical and artistic expertise, and the organization of training workshops for young filmmakers. The two sides also highlighted the importance of encouraging the participation of Tunisian films in festivals and cinematic events in the United States, while enhancing the presence of American cinematic works in Tunisia’s cultural venues.

The meeting also examined ways to expand cooperation in the field of festivals and cultural events, notably by supporting joint artistic programming and encouraging the participation of troupes and artists from both countries in national and international festivals, with a view to enhancing their reach and reinforcing their international profile.

On this occasion, the minister reaffirmed Tunisia’s strong commitment to developing international cultural partnerships. She noted that relations with the United States are built on a long history of sustained cooperation and mutual respect, emphasizing the depth of diplomatic ties between the two nations.

She further stressed that culture represents one of the main pillars of these relations, given its central role in building bridges of communication and fostering mutual understanding between peoples. She reiterated the ministry’s commitment to further advancing cultural partnerships in ways that serve shared interests and enhance Tunisia’s international standing.

For his part, the United States Ambassador to Tunisia expressed pride in the strength and depth of diplomatic relations between his country and the Republic of Tunisia, stating that they are founded on a historic partnership and ongoing cooperation across various fields. He also highlighted the importance of the cultural dimension in supporting these ties, describing it as a space for dialogue, exchange and rapprochement between peoples, and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continuing support for joint cultural initiatives and expanding avenues of cooperation in the service of shared interests and the values of understanding and friendship between the two nations.
