Deputy Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT), Sami Tahri declared on Sunday, March 28, 2021, in Sousse that the date of the political dialogue proposed by the UGTT will start on April 15, a decision adopted after the meeting between the President of the Republic and the UGTT Secretary-General.
He stated that the UGTT is a force of pressure and counter-power when some utilise their hegemony in the name of the ballot.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of the meeting of the UGTT Regional Council in Sousse, he affirmed that the UGTT was included in the democratic process to which it contributed by resorting to constitutional and struggle means.
Addressing the spirit of the initiative, Tahri emphasised that it is not directed at saving anyone but at saving Tunisia.
He emphasised that it is not a question of mere words as some desire to qualify it which assures that everyone wants to save Tunisia which he dismissed given that if everyone wanted to save Tunisia then it would have been on the right track since 2011.
He stressed that there are those who want to save themselves only, maintaining that “they regard Tunisia as a booty from which they benefit.
He recalled that the President of the Republic initially interacted on the initiative except he placed conditions by asking the revision of the structure by integrating the youth and by dismissing certain parties that either represents corruption or terrorism.
Sami Tahri evoked that the President of the Republic issued a statement in which he stated he adopted the UGTT’s initiative, specifying that they had agreed to arrangements to complete representations.
The official lamented that it has taken four months since, while the crisis spreads and the problems grow and the struggles continue, recalling that the president of the République has not met the prime minister for more than a month and vice versa.
A situation that has brought complete paralysis and blockage, assuring that the workers and the UGTT are wronged as they have negotiations to carry and big companies they want to save and others.
He stated that the President of the Republic announced in a press release four days ago that he was going to organize a dialogue with young people through electronic platforms, seeing that the UGTT rejected considering that it is a coup d’état over customs and disrespect for the Union.
Sami Tahri who communicated this position reminded some trade unionists that he is the official spokesperson for the UGTT, emphasising that this position reflects that of the UGTT
He indicated that the President of the Republic invited the Secretary-General of the UGTT who made it a provision that the meeting is behind closed doors and no speech to be made to know if there is progress or a will to save Tunisia or not.
According to him, there is no more time to waste to save Tunisia, adding that it has been agreed on April 15 as a date, wishing that we save Tunisia.
Speaking to the media, Sami Tahri expressed hope that after the meeting between the President of the Republic and the UGTT Secretary General that by next week arrangements concerning the participants and the date of the political dialogue will be determined.
He further indicated that the meeting made it possible to notify the Regional Council of the situation in the country, the evolution of the initiative and the state of social negotiations, declaring that they held a session on Friday where they made excellent progress in completing all the orders and 46 agreements included in the February 6 agreement.
He also expressed the hope that they will be issued successively in the JORT by respecting the deadlines set with the first instalment in May 2021.
