The municipality of Zarzis has announced it will no longer accept bodies of illegal migrants for burial in the municipal cemetery. In fact, the Gabes Regional Hospital normally sends bodies previously submitted for DNA testing.
The municipality made the conclusion after sending 32 decomposed and bagless bodies said Mayor Mekki Laarayedh. The latter said that the municipal agents were “astounded” to see this spectacle and this lack of respect for the dignity of these people who passed away in tragic conditions.
The mayor revealed that the hospital is preparing to send another 100 corpses, calling on municipal authorities in Gabes to assist with the burial operations as the “Jardin d’Afrique” cemetery has almost reached its maximum capacity.
He further said that he has not received any assistance of any sort from NGOs and humanitarian associations.
