There are some who defy all laws and challenge public authorities, in full view of everyone, and without any shame.
Little children, sometimes preschool-aged, who are a real pain to behold. They are abandoned at every street corner, in the capital, and probably elsewhere. They are exploited by mafias who force them to beg all day long, and sometimes even at night, in seaside resorts.
These mafias stop at nothing; they defy the ban on begging and the ban on child labor. And this image has, unfortunately, become commonplace, even banal. But what makes the difference, in these days of heatwave, is the image of these toddlers, abandoned in the middle of a heatwave, while their peers hide in search of coolness. They are abandoned under a blazing sun, with temperatures exceeding 50°C, sometimes even without a single drop of water. We see them panting, seeking refuge under a pseudo-hat that doesn’t even manage to hide their misery.
Here, the authorities have a duty to act, and child protection authorities first and foremost. And even if the phenomenon of begging through children has become so commonplace that it hardly attracts attention anymore, this torture in full sun should change that. These children must be saved from this slavery, this torture, and this abusive exploitation. And those who make them work in this way must be punished with exemplary force, in an attempt to stop this scourge, which is just one among many others that plague our society, with total impunity. And this applies to all children, regardless of their skin color. Because the children of sub-Saharan Africans are also, despite what some people may say, human beings whom we have a duty to protect, as long as they are among us. A word to the wise!
