Tunisia-“What is cybercrime and what is the significance of Tunisia joining Budapest Convention?” Mounir Ben Salha explains

Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, lawyer Mounir Ben Salha addressed the growing nature of electronic crime, which encompasses any illegal activity facilitated by computers and technology. Ben Salha clarified that while the essence of crimes such as fraud stays the same, the medium through which they are perpetrated has transitioned from physical to digital, thereby classifying them as electronic crimes when implemented via computers or within virtual environments.

He pointed out that the internet has become a platform for various violations including but not limited to prostitution, terrorism, threats, defamation, impersonation, and the dissemination of false information. Ben Salha underscored the Tunisian legislature’s efforts to keep pace with technological advancements by updating and creating laws specific to these new challenges.

Similarly, Ben Salha emphasised Tunisia’s legislative strides towards combating cybercrime through the adoption of new laws. He also cited Tunisia’s preparation to ratify the Budapest Treaty, underscoring the importance of international collaboration and coordination in tackling crimes that transcend national borders, given the global nature of the internet and electronic crime.
