Tunisian diaspora: toward an amendment to the law governing the Council of Tunisians abroad

The Committee on Foreign Relations, International Cooperation, Affairs of Tunisians Abroad and Migration will hold a working session on Monday, February 9. The meeting will focus on setting the committee’s work program for the coming period, amid several legislative files currently under review.

Continued review of a key draft law

During the session, the committee will also continue examining Draft Law No. 2024/064, relating to the National Council of Tunisians Residing Abroad. This text is among the committee’s priorities, given its direct impact on the representation and institutional framework of the Tunisian diaspora.

An amendment to the 2016 law

The draft law under review seeks to amend Law No. 68 of 2016, dated August 3, 2016, which established the National Council of Tunisians Residing Abroad. That law defines the council’s mandate, composition, and operating mechanisms.

Through this amendment, the initiators aim to revise certain aspects of the existing legal framework to better align it with institutional developments and the current expectations of Tunisians living overseas.

    An institutional and representative challenge

The National Council of Tunisians Residing Abroad is a central mechanism for consultation and policy proposals on issues related to migration and Tunisian communities abroad. Discussions within the committee are therefore expected to address the council’s governance, effectiveness, and representativeness.

The committee’s work will continue in the coming weeks, with the aim of finalizing the text before it moves on to the next stages of the legislative process.
