In his first official match at the helm of the “Carthage Eagles,” Mouine Chaâbani had to settle for a draw against Uganda (1-1) on Thursday in Radès, during the opening round of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.
This minor setback extends a winless streak dating back to the start of 2026.
Tunisia has seen three head coaches: Sabri Lamouchi, Hervé Renard, and now Mouine Chaâbani. None of them has managed to win a match with the team during this period.
1- Lamouchi: Just one match at the World Cup
Sabri Lamouchi took charge of the team prior to the 2026 World Cup. However, his tenure ended after just a single match in the tournament. In their opening game, Tunisia suffered a heavy defeat against Sweden (1-5).
The Tunisian Football Federation subsequently ended his stint and handed the team over to Hervé Renard for the remainder of the competition.
2- Renard fails to turn things around
The change of coach did not enable Tunisia to secure its first victory in the tournament. Hervé Renard managed the next two matches, against Japan and the Netherlands.
The Carthage Eagles lost both games, 0-4 and 1-3 respectively. Consequently, Tunisia exited the World Cup without a win, recording three losses in three matches.
3- Chaâbani starts with a draw, but isn’t disappointed!
Following Renard’s departure, the Tunisian Federation selected Mouine Chaâbani to launch a new era. The former Espérance de Tunis and RS Berkane coach signed a contract running until 2030, with the goal of rebuilding the national team.
His first official match was an opportunity for Tunisia to kick off this new cycle on a positive note. However, playing in Radès, the Carthage Eagles let their lead slip away, settling for a draw against Uganda (1-1).
Chaâbani bears no responsibility for the preceding results. After the match, he stated that there was no major disappointment within the squad, given that it was the opening game of the campaign.
Moreover, he took charge of a team fresh off a winless World Cup run that had already seen two coaching changes. Nevertheless, his debut result extends a streak that Tunisia is now eager to break.
Chaâbani’s squad will have another chance to get his tenure off the ground this Monday against Botswana in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. It will be his second match at the helm of the Carthage Eagles.
Victory remains elusive
The record is straightforward: three coaches since the start of this period—three defeats for the first two, and a draw for the third. Tunisia is still without a win.
