A judicial source reported that Ayachi El Hemami was arrested on Tuesday by officers of the judicial police, after being placed on the wanted list, in execution of the final judgment issued against him by the Tunis Court of Appeal in the so-called “conspiracy” case.
The same source stated, in a declaration to the Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) news agency, that he will be placed in detention to serve the sentence handed down against him.
Last Friday at dawn, the criminal chamber specializing in terrorism cases at the Tunis Court of Appeal issued final prison sentences against the defendants in what is known as the “conspiracy against state security” case.
The prison terms handed down against the detainees ranged from 10 to 45 years, while one detained defendant was granted a dismissal of charges.
As for the defendants who appeared in court while free, the sentences imposed ranged from 5 to 35 years, with two of them also benefiting from a dismissal of charges.
The court sentenced Ayachi Ahmed Rabah El Hemami, who had been appearing in the case while free, to five years in prison and two years of administrative monitoring (compared with an initial sentence of eight years at first instance).
Regarding the defendants still at large, the Court confirmed the initial sentences of 33 years in prison with immediate execution, while increasing some of them to 43 years, also with immediate enforcement.
The case dates back to February 2023, when politicians from various political backgrounds, along with former officials, ministers, lawyers, business figures and security officers, were arrested on charges primarily related to “forming an alliance with the aim of conspiring against the internal and external security of the State.”
