The Tunisian Court of Cassation has denied the appeal of former Speaker of Parliament and leader of the Ennahdha movement, Rached Ghannouchi, confirming his verdict to 15 months in prison, with three years of administrative supervision.
A ruling confirmed on appeal and validated by the Court of Cassation
The case dates back to a complaint filed by a trade unionist from the security sector. The public prosecutor at the Judicial Pole for Counter-Terrorism then initiated proceedings against Rached Ghannouchi, accusing him of glorifying and advocating terrorism due to his remarks describing certain leaders as “tyrants” during a tribute to a senior member of the Ennahdha party in southern Tunisia.
Initially convicted at first instance to 15 months in prison, the former head of Parliament had this sentence confirmed on appeal. Hoping to have this judgment annulled, he appealed to the Court of Cassation. However, the Court of Cassation rejected his appeal, therefore validating the judgment pronounced by the Court of Appeal of Tunis.
