At least 12 people were killed and four others wounded today, Tuesday, in an explosion at an ammunition factory in northwestern Turkey, according to the regional governor.

Ismail Ustaoglu, the governor of Balikesir province, said on the X platform: “According to preliminary reports, 12 employees were killed, and four others were taken to the hospital.” He added that the explosion occurred Tuesday morning due to a “technical defect.”

Speaking to NTV News, Ustaoglu explained that the injured employees were transported to the hospital and that their condition is not critical.

Local authorities reported that the factory where the explosion occurred manufactures ammunition and explosives for civilian use.

The same authorities confirmed that firefighters successfully extinguished a fire that broke out after the explosion and that the factory had been completely evacuated. An investigation into the incident has been launched, ruling out any possibility of sabotage, according to his statement.
