Twitter to forbid political ads

Twitter will ban political advertising on its platform next month, the company’s chief executive said, a move that obtained recognition from Democrats and scorn from Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

The new policy will come into effect on 22 November and will be applied globally to all electioneering advertisements, as well as ads associated with political matters.

“While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics,” co-founder and CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey tweeted.

Social media companies, including Twitter rival Facebook Inc (FB.O) face growing pressure to stop carrying ads that spread false information that could steer elections.
