U.S. Secretary of State: Syria’s Transitional Authorities Could Collapse Within Weeks

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that Syria’s transitional authorities may collapse within a few weeks, potentially plunging the country into a widespread civil war.

Speaking during a hearing before the U.S. Senate, Rubio stated:

“This isn’t about the transitional authorities themselves — we don’t believe they are causing harm. The problem lies with other actors on the ground who pose a threat. We need to protect not only those entering the country, but also those who may be forced to leave. We must be prepared for evacuations and have plans in place to defend against attacks.”

He emphasized that the situation in Syria remains unstable, and that the United States does not rule out the possibility of the interim government falling in the coming weeks, which could lead to a large-scale civil war.

It is worth noting that U.S. President Donald Trump met with Syrian President Ahmad Char’a in Riyadh on May 14, marking the first meeting between U.S. and Syrian leaders in 25 years.
