Ukraine: Trump proposes partial Ukrainian withdrawal from Donetsk!

On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the United States had suggested that Ukraine withdraw from some of the areas it still controls in the eastern Donetsk region.

In return, Russian forces could pull back from the regions of Sumy, Kharkiv and Dnipropetrovsk, on condition that they remain in the south (Kherson and Zaporizhzhia).

U.S. officials have also proposed establishing a “free economic zone” or a “demilitarized zone” in the affected part of Donetsk. But according to Zelensky, how this zone would be governed remains unclear.

Two main issues still need to be resolved in the negotiations, namely: control of the Donetsk region, the focal point of the fighting, and the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

It should also be noted that any future agreement will have to be fair and endorsed by the Ukrainian people through elections or a referendum.
