Umrah and pilgrimages: mandatory vaccination from February 2025

Saudi authorities have issued circular imposing new health conditions on all travelers entering the country, regardless of their visa type.

Beginning February 1, 2025, visitors will be required to present evidence of vaccination against quadrivalent meningococcal meningitis (ACYW135) upon arrival, or they will be denied entry.

Mandatory Vaccination: Details and Deadlines
Travelers, whether coming for pilgrimage, business, or other reasons, must comply with the following requirements:

  • Vaccination Location: Vaccines can be administered at regional vaccination centres, private pharmacies, or the Pasteur Institute in Tunis.
  • Deadline: Vaccination must be finished at least 10 days before entering Saudi Arabia and remains valid for 3 years.
  • For Pilgrims and Travelers on Scheduled Flights: Agencies must inform travellers in advance. Failure to do so will prevent travelers from claiming any rights for reimbursement or compensation.

Specific Measures for High-Risk Regions

  • Meningitis Belt Countries: Travelers from high-risk African countries, such as Sudan, Niger, or Chad, will receive additional preventive treatment upon arrival in Saudi Arabia.
  • Polio Vaccination: Nationals from countries like Pakistan, Syria, or Yemen must present a certificate confirming they were vaccinated against oral polio six weeks before travelling. An additional dose will be given upon arrival, regardless of age.

Additional Health Recommendations
In addition to mandatory vaccines, the Saudi Ministry of Health strongly recommends flu vaccination, especially for:

  • People with chronic conditions (diabetes, heart diseases, respiratory issues, etc.).
  • Pregnant women, children under 5, and overweight individuals.
