UN : António Guterres Praises Tunisia as a “Voice of Wisdom in the Mediterranean”

Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad, Mohamed Ali Nafti, met on Saturday, September 27, 2025, with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

During the meeting, the minister conveyed greetings from the President of the Republic, along with his appreciation for the principled and courageous positions that the Secretary-General has consistently expressed in support of the just Palestinian cause, and for his clear condemnation of the ongoing violations committed by the occupying entity.

The minister also reaffirmed Tunisia’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and to the central role of the United Nations, which, despite shortcomings and structural challenges requiring deep reforms, remains the legitimate, unifying framework and the ultimate recourse for preserving international peace and security while promoting justice and international law.

In this context, he recalled Tunisia’s ongoing contributions, since independence, to UN peacekeeping missions, as well as the initiative of the President of the Republic to designate 2025 as the year of “Strengthening Multilateral Action and Enhancing Cooperation with the United Nations System”, on the occasion of the Organization’s 80th anniversary.

For his part, the UN Secretary-General asked the minister to convey his respect and esteem to President Kaïs Saïed, praising Tunisia’s measured positions on current international issues and describing it as a “voice of wisdom in the Mediterranean.”

He also highlighted the exemplary level of cooperation between Tunisia and the UN and its specialized agencies, reiterating his appreciation for Tunisia’s continued support of the Organization’s work and its mission in Libya.
