UN assesses situation in Afghanistan as death toll rises

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated on Wednesday that he “was saddened to hear of the tragic loss of life caused by the earthquake which struck Afghanistan earlier today.”

The remarks are part of a statement published by the organization in which Guterres said the death toll “might continue to rise.” Earlier reports from local media have said that at least 1,000 people have been killed and around 1,500 injured.

“The United Nations in Afghanistan is fully mobilized. Our teams are already on the ground assessing the needs and providing initial support. Now is the time for solidarity,” concluded the statement.
