The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), in partnership with the Tunisian government and the Danish-Arab Partnership Programme under Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, hosted an event titled “Green Horizons: Youth and Employment” in Tunis at the end of May.
Addressing Youth Employment and Green Growth
The event focused on the key challenges and opportunities surrounding youth employment and entrepreneurship, with particular emphasis on sectors tied to green growth.
In a statement, the UNDP highlighted that youth unemployment remains a critical issue in the Arab region, with rates projected to reach 24.4% by 2025, according to the International Labour Organization. In Tunisia, the youth unemployment rate stands at 40.5%, rising to 43.3% among young women.
The gathering also showcased several successful practices and experiences, notably those stemming from the UNDP’s Green Growth and Job Creation Accelerator Programme, implemented under the Danish-Arab Partnership. This regional initiative supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan, with a strong focus on empowering youth and women.
A Multistakeholder Initiative for Inclusive Solutions
According to the UNDP, the initiative brought together young participants, government officials, private sector actors, civil society representatives, and international partners.
Together, they explored practical solutions to advance youth employment and entrepreneurship in Tunisia, particularly within the framework of green transition and sustainable development.
The event also highlighted national efforts, including the Tunisian government’s commitment to youth through its National Youth Strategy 2025.
These initiatives underscore the authorities’ determination to create inclusive, forward-looking opportunities for young people.
Promising practices from both the public and private sectors, as well as international cooperation, were also spotlighted.
In this context, the event served as an opportunity to strengthen synergies among stakeholders and ensure the active participation of youth in shaping tangible solutions for economic and social transformation.
Building Shared Solutions with Youth at the Center
Marie Kawar, Director of the UNDP Regional Hub for Arab States, stated: “This event is not just about discussing challenges—it’s about building shared solutions with young people at the center.” She added, “By bringing together youth, government, the private sector, and international partners, we aim to make real progress in youth employment and green growth in Tunisia. These efforts contribute to broader regional and global dialogues on the future of work, economic transformation, and inclusive development.”
