United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers “may constitute a war crime,” according to his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric.
Guterres underscored that “UNIFIL personnel and its premises must never be targeted. Attacks against peacekeepers are in breach of international law, including international humanitarian law. They may constitute a war crime.”
Additionally, the secretary-general urged all parties to the Middle East conflict, including the Israeli military, to “refrain from any and all actions that put our peacekeepers at risk.” He reiterated his call for a ceasefire and implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
