United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged Hamas and Israel to uphold the ceasefire in Gaza and resume negotiations. In a Tuesday statement on X, Guterres emphasized the need to prevent renewed violence, warning of the “immense tragedy” it would bring. He also called on Hamas to move forward with the planned release of hostages.
His remarks came after Hamas delayed the February 15 hostage release, citing Israel’s failure to honour truce agreements. According to Gaza’s civil defence, Israeli strikes in the middle of the ceasefire since mid-January have left at least 103 Palestinians dead. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump warned that the ceasefire should be cancelled if Israeli hostages are not freed by Saturday.
