UN: Concern over declining donations to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed serious concern about the past year, citing the numerous job cuts (300) affecting the entire UN system and the budget crisis that is hindering investigators from documenting international crimes.

All of this has led to a decrease in donations and even attacks from traditional donors, such as the United States.

High Commissioner Volker Türk stated that the crisis is particularly impacting the work of investigators and warned: “Currently, we have 50-60% of the necessary funding. This means we are less able to document human rights violations. For example, in the DRC, we lack the funds to establish the commission of inquiry [created at the beginning of the year]. So, yes, the consequences are very serious.”

However, “In Europe, anti-human rights or anti-gender equality groups received nearly $1.2 billion between 2019 and 2023. Much of this money comes from donors in Europe, Russia and the United States,” the UN official pointed out.
