United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk said on Monday in a statement that ending the war in the Gaza Strip, as well as preventing it from spreading further, is “an absolute and urgent priority.”
He also mentioned that “the wider situation of illegality across the occupied Palestinian territory deriving from Israel’s policies and practices,” must also be addressed. Turk underlined that the international community cannot turn a blind eye to “blatant disregard for international law,” which encompasses “binding decisions” from the UN Security Council and the International Court of Justice.
The UN official reminded the audience that wars “spill over” into future generations, as they breed hatred if their causes are not tackled.
